Contrast

Balancing contrasting points.

on the other hand; while; whereas.

Arranged marriages are common in many Middle Eastern countries. In the West, on the other hand, they are unusual.

I like spending my holidays in the mountains, while/whereas my wife prefers the seaside.

While/whereas can be put before the first of 2 contrasting points,e.g.

While/whereas the English alphabet has 26 letters, English phonemic transcription has over 40 basic symbols.

Emphasising a contrast

Stronger contrast

however; nevertheless; mind you; still; yet; in spite of this

Hurricanes and Tornadoes

This table show us the information about two strong winds . In the following , I am going to make a comparison between the hurricanes and tornadoes.

Despite the fact that there are major differences between these winds let's first consider a few things that they have in common. The first major similarity is that they both are strong and powerful; for example both winds have a high speed. Another similarity is that the two of them can be very destructive.

On the other hand, there are also many important differences between them. The first difference is about the minimum and maximum wind speed. The hurricanes minimum speed is about 74pmh and 155-200pmh maximum speed while the tornadoes have a minimum 40mph and 250-300mph maximum speed. A second difference is the hurricanes are classified on the Saffir-simpson C1-C5 scale, but the tornadoes are classified by the Fujita F0-F5. Another difference is about the duration and where they start. The hurricanes have one week average and they start over warm oceans, whereas the tornadoes only last a few minutes and sometimes hours and they start usually over land. The third difference is about prediction; the hurricanes can be predicted 2-3 days in advance for a wide area, but tornadoes can be only predicted minutes before they hits.

All in all, the differences outweigh the similarities. They have a strong distinct relationship in terms of mass destruction. Also, tornadoes are less predictable and last for a shorter period of time.

Different Models Of Cars

This table shows us the specifications of four popular medium sized saloon cars. In this essay I will analyze this information.

There are two types of cars which are made in Japan and they have similar prices. They are the Toyota Corolla and the Nissan Micra and both cost about $ 15,500 with little difference in the price. The Micra is the most economical in terms of fuel consumption. The car with the biggest engine size, the VW Golf is the least economical. The Ford Focus is made in the U.S.A and it does 50 miles to the gallon. The VW is the most expensive of the four cars at $18,250 while the Micra is the cheapest at $ 15,500 and it does more miles to the gallon than the rest of them.

In summary, the table shows the differences and the similarities between the four cars. Also, it shows that the VW has the biggest engine size, although it does fewer miles to the gallon than the other cars.

The UK government’s budget

The UK government’s budget in 1996 was £ 315 billion. This chart shows what the government spent the money on, divided into ten categories.

The government spent most money, by far, on social security, £100 billion. This was almost twice as much as the next category, health which cost £53 billion. Also, we can figure that the expenditure of these two combined accounted for almost a half of the UK budget in 1996. Next came education with £38 billion which is considered good budget for improving society. The government spent more than £20 billion of the budget on the following: debt interest, other expenditure and defence. The final three categories were less than £20 billion: law and order, housing heritage and environment, industry, agriculture and employment.

The outstanding feature of the pie chart is the social security and health accounted for almost half of the UK government’s budget in 1996. In fact social security cost almost as much as health, education and defence combined.
