Should children be raised to co-operate or to compete?
To be competitive and cooperative, these are the main two basis to make our children in the future. Also, this depends on the ways of the parents in how to raise their children. In this essay, I am going to write about my opinion which is raising children to be cooperative is better than competitive.
First I will begin with the arguments which in favor of competition. The first argument is that encorging children to be competitive are very good because they will get high marks in the exam and get great jobs in the future. Another argument is that children, when they become competitive, will not accept loss therefore, they will be good leaders and creative persons. For example, in the sport the competitive types will work very hard and exercise very day to win the game.
On the other hand, I will talk about the reasons why I prefer raising children in a co- operative way. The first reason is that no one can live alone so they need to help each other. Teamwork is very important for the children to improve their skills in communication. Finally, teaching the children to co-operation with each other will make them very helpful and increase their self confidence.
In conclusion, both competition and co-operation are very important for children. Also, it will help them to play a great role in their successful life.

A woman's role
Is a woman’s proper role in society to pursue a career or to be a mother and wife?
Traditionally a woman’s role has been as a mother and wife. However, more and more women worldwide are being educated to a high level and are pursuing careers. Does this pose a threat to the upbringing of young children and to social stability?
There are many reasons why a woman should be at home to look after her children. Children need their mother’s love and attention. A mother substitute, like a maid, however caring, cannot provide the same emotional support that a child needs. In addition, a maid may not speak the child’s language and there may well be cultural differences. A mother plays a crucial role in developing her child’s language and cultural awareness. Even worse, if there is no mother and no maid at home, children will feel neglected.
On the other hand, women have an important role to play in society. If intelligent women want to pursue careers, why should they not have the same opportunity to do so as men? Women have a lot to offer to society, which would be poorer if they couldn’t do so. In the West, it is generally accepted that women have the choice of whether to pursue a career or not. Of course there are more traditional societies where this is more difficult.
In an ideal world, a woman should be able to pursue a career and also have time to bring up a family, but it’s not an easy task to get the balance right.

US farm workers
The graph shows us some information about the number of farms and farm workers in the U.S for the period 1910-2000.
All the way through, the number of workers was bigger than the number of farms. At the beginning of the period 1910, there were nearly 14 million workers, twice the number of farms which was 6 million. The number of farms gently increased over the next 20 years, while the number of workers fell slightly. In 1970, the number of farms fell to about a half of the number of workers. Also, in this year both the number of farms and the number of workers fell dramatically. In 1980, the information shows that the number of workers and farms stayed steady and decreased gradually until 2000.
All in all, the statistics show the number of farms fell from over 6 million to just over 2 million. Moreover, with the growth of development the fall in the number of workers was more rapid, from over 13 million to just 3 million.

Mobiles in the classroom
In the past , education was a very important matter all over the world. But these days every student uses mobile phones in the classrooms which is distracting the student from concentrating with the teacher. I feel using mobile phones is harmful in a number of ways; I think it is also beneficial in other ways. Now I will outline compelling reasons why phones should be banned in class.
Mobile phones have gone a long way from the days they were used only to make and receive calls .They now have cameras, recorders, speakers, and even internet and their applications can prove to be quite useful in class but only as long as the students are mature enough to use their phones professionally in class for their academic purposes.
The problem with the use of mobile phones in class is that the students can be easily distracted by social chat sites and SMS and the inappropriate use of some websites. The noise of sending and receiving calls and messages will distract not only the individual student but the whole class. Finally, of course, ADMC has notices in all classrooms strictly prohibiting the use of mobile phones, as well as the consumption of food and drink.
All in all, there are so many disadvantages of using phones in classes that most schools prefer to ban the use of mobile phones in their classes but if the mobile phones are used maturely in class then the advantages of mobile phones would be more then the disadvantages just as long as the students are disciplined and have self control.

Water Shortage
The UAE is a desert country, with very little yearly rainfall, and so there is a steady problem of water shortage.
The most noticeable reason for the shortage of water is the fast population growth. More people means more food and this has led to a growing demand for an increase in agricultural production, which in turn means more irrigation and therefore more water. In addition, the economy of the country has greatly expanded over the past 50 years. Industrialization has greatly increased the demand for water. The climate of the UAE makes it difficult to meet the increased demand for water. There is very little rainfall and no surface water makes the situation worse.
Desalination is perhaps the most obvious solution. It’s expensive but the UAE is a rich country. Similarly, making better use of underground water is not cheap but it would help to answer the problem. Dams to store water when it does rain have already been built in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Charging people more for water, educational programmes in schools and colleges, and national advertising campaigns could also raise public awareness of the problem.
All in all, the UAE gets most of its fresh water from desalination plants. This is the most clear short-term solution. In the long run, however, raising public awareness of the problem and encouraging people to use water more responsibly is the most important factor in solving the problem of water shortages.

Traffic Congestion
Abu Dhabi is a large city. It is the capital of the UAE. In all cities in the world there are traffic and parking problems. The main cause is the population has improved. This is the first cause for traffic and parking problems.
In Abu Dhabi every home has more than one car. The second cause is economic expansion. There are more marketable vehicles .Also, the weather in summer is not helping people to use the cycles for transport. Finally, parking is the big cause of traffic congestion. There are no more parking spaces for people to park their cars.
On the other hand, the solutions for these problems are as follows. Make sure each building has adequate parking. Each apartment should have parking. Also, improving public transport will help the government to solve the problem. For example increase the number of buses or build a metro to decrease the number of car users. One solution is to increase the age of license holders. In Abu Dhabi most accidents involve young people aged 18 to 24. Finally, the last solution is to improve the obtainable road system. Like build more bridges, overpasses and underpasses.
All in all, the main problem is the parking. The best solution is to build the parking buildings. Also, improve the public transport like raise the number of buses and build a metro, although I think a metro will cost more and buses are the best idea to solve the problems.

Age of Marriage
The bar graph shows the downturn, over the past 30-40 years, in the percentage of women aged 15-19 who are married in 6 Arab countries. The table gives us the age of first marriage for men and women in 12 Arab countries, plus Turkey and Iran.
The bar chart shows the fall in all 6 Arab countries over the past 3-4 decades. The most striking characteristic of the bar chart is the UAE, where the percentage of 15-19 year old married women declined from 57% in 1975 to 8% in 1995. Other enormous drops are in Libya, from 40% in 1973 to 1% in 1995 and Kuwait, from 38% in 1970 to 5% in 1996. There were other significant falls in Libya, Tunisia and Kuwait. The age of first marriage, in the table, showed a range from mid- to late-20s for men and from low- to mid-20s for women.
To sum up, the only countries to come into view in both bar chart and table are the UAE, Kuwait and Palestine. The most dramatic drop in the bar chart was in the UAE. The table shows that in 2000 the average aged of marriage for women in the UAE was 23.1.

Arranged marriages are common in many Middle Eastern countries. In the West, on the other hand, they are unusual.
I like spending my holidays in the mountains, while/whereas my wife prefers the seaside.
While/whereas can be put before the first of 2 contrasting points,e.g.
While/whereas the English alphabet has 26 letters, English phonemic transcription has over 40 basic symbols.

Hurricanes and Tornadoes
This table show us the information about two strong winds . In the following , I am going to make a comparison between the hurricanes and tornadoes.
Despite the fact that there are major differences between these winds let's first consider a few things that they have in common. The first major similarity is that they both are strong and powerful; for example both winds have a high speed. Another similarity is that the two of them can be very destructive.
On the other hand, there are also many important differences between them. The first difference is about the minimum and maximum wind speed. The hurricanes minimum speed is about 74pmh and 155-200pmh maximum speed while the tornadoes have a minimum 40mph and 250-300mph maximum speed. A second difference is the hurricanes are classified on the Saffir-simpson C1-C5 scale, but the tornadoes are classified by the Fujita F0-F5. Another difference is about the duration and where they start. The hurricanes have one week average and they start over warm oceans, whereas the tornadoes only last a few minutes and sometimes hours and they start usually over land. The third difference is about prediction; the hurricanes can be predicted 2-3 days in advance for a wide area, but tornadoes can be only predicted minutes before they hits.
All in all, the differences outweigh the similarities. They have a strong distinct relationship in terms of mass destruction. Also, tornadoes are less predictable and last for a shorter period of time.

Around the College
We are all students at Abu Dhabi Men's College.
We have to be in the classroom on time.
Physics and chemistry lessons take place in a laboratory.
There are no healthy food outlets in our canteen/cafeteria.
I read books and magazines and also do IELTS practice in our college library, which is large and well- stocked.
Student services organize activities.
The academic office performs many administrative tasks, such as issuing ID cards and arranging exam schedules.
There is a special learning centre in our library, called the Active Learning Zone, to provide students with extra help.
Conferences and large meetings are often held in the college auditorium, which is also where we do our progress tests.

Different Models Of Cars
This table shows us the specifications of four popular medium sized saloon cars. In this essay I will analyze this information.
There are two types of cars which are made in Japan and they have similar prices. They are the Toyota Corolla and the Nissan Micra and both cost about $ 15,500 with little difference in the price. The Micra is the most economical in terms of fuel consumption. The car with the biggest engine size, the VW Golf is the least economical. The Ford Focus is made in the U.S.A and it does 50 miles to the gallon. The VW is the most expensive of the four cars at $18,250 while the Micra is the cheapest at $ 15,500 and it does more miles to the gallon than the rest of them.
In summary, the table shows the differences and the similarities between the four cars. Also, it shows that the VW has the biggest engine size, although it does fewer miles to the gallon than the other cars.

Top Date Producing Countries
The bar chart shows the top ten date producing countries and their annual production in tones, 2001.
The leading producer of the dates is Egypt with over a million tonnes , while Iran was the second producer, with almost 0.9 million. Next came the U.A.E and Saudi Arabia rivaling each other with about 750,000 tonnes each. Also, Pakistan and Iraq have about the same annual production of the dates, both accounted for almost 600,000 tonnes. In the Gulf countries, the U.A.E is the leading producer of dates with 700,000 tonnes but Saudi Arabia was not far behind. Algeria supplied the world with nearly 400,000 tonnes and Oman around a quarter of a million. The final two countries produced less than 200,00 tonnes, Sudan and Libya.
In summary, date production is the most plentiful in Egypt while Libya is the scarcest. Also, there are 6 countries which produce more than half a million tonnes.

The UK government’s budget
The UK government’s budget in 1996 was £ 315 billion. This chart shows what the government spent the money on, divided into ten categories.
The government spent most money, by far, on social security, £100 billion. This was almost twice as much as the next category, health which cost £53 billion. Also, we can figure that the expenditure of these two combined accounted for almost a half of the UK budget in 1996. Next came education with £38 billion which is considered good budget for improving society. The government spent more than £20 billion of the budget on the following: debt interest, other expenditure and defence. The final three categories were less than £20 billion: law and order, housing heritage and environment, industry, agriculture and employment.
The outstanding feature of the pie chart is the social security and health accounted for almost half of the UK government’s budget in 1996. In fact social security cost almost as much as health, education and defence combined.
